Egyptian Style

Page history last edited by Nanda 3 yrs ago

Modern Egyptian -- Reda-influenced Raqs Sharki. Anything from Dina onwards, her style really was revolutionary. And of course there are contextual considerations in any cultural expression such as costume -- modern fashions. Music -- not necessarily modern but the newer oriental styled music, Oum K is good for this genre (simply because she is always good) but music unique to it would be arabic pop and the increased influence of shaabi (which is not much more that 40 yrs old)

NeoClassical Egyptian -- Soheir and Fifi all the way -- again costuming reminiscent of that era, they were still big on chiffon skirts, high splits in those skirts and all about the fringing, though you could do without. Urban baladi style and Assuit dresses!! Music -- Lots of Oum K, it wasn't until Soheir that anyone danced to the great lady and other composers that we consider 'classic' such as Halim Hafez and Abdul Wahab, Baladi and traditional pieces (not to be confused with 'folk') also those funky retro synthesized oriental compositions.

Classical or Casino Opera -- Is really recreating the fantasy of the golden age of cinema (and as some have pointed out previously on bhuz that is Not the golden age of of Egyptian dance as a whole) so If the girl on stage looks as though she just stepped out of Tamr Henna (the movie not the dancer ;-) then it's a fair bet they are recreating those oriental dance fantasies.

That style is more about creating the appropriate visual cues to as to be reminiscent of those movies so I would expect to see styled hair, chiffon skirts, wide belts and not much fringing or looped fringe, shoes, some identifiable 'signature' moves and no Oum K more perhaps in the direction of good 'ol Farid al Atrache or his sis Asmahan or Leila Murad or Abdul Wahab.
